1. How Do We Assess Democracy's Outcomes?

Short Note:

• Why Democracy is Better: Promotes equality among citizens, enhances dignity of the individual, improves quality of decision-making, provides a method to resolve conflicts, and allows room to correct mistakes.

• Expectation vs Reality: Democracy is often seen as a superior form of government in principle, but in practice, its outcomes depend on active citizen participation and institutional strength.

2. Accountable, Responsive & Legitimate Government

Short Note:

• Accountable Government: Citizens have the right to choose their rulers and exercise control over them through free and fair elections.

• Responsive Government: Expected to take care of the needs and demands of the people, following proper procedures and transparency.

• Legitimate Government: A government that is elected by the people and rules according to constitutional norms. It is "people's own government."

3. Economic Growth, Development & Inequality

Short Note:

• Economic Growth: Dictatorships have slightly higher economic growth rates historically compared to democracies, but democracy ensures equitable distribution and human development.

• Reduction of Inequality & Poverty: Democracies are based on political equality, but economic disparities often persist, requiring proactive welfare policies by governments.

4. Accommodation of Diversity & Dignity of Citizens

Short Note:

• Accommodation of Social Diversity: Democracy develops procedures to conduct competition peacefully among social groups (e.g., Belgium model).

• Dignity & Freedom: Democracy stands much superior to any other form of government in promoting dignity and freedom of the individual, especially for women and historically marginalized communities.
